Abstract of The Aspects of Nigerian English in Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun

This study examines the aspects of Nigerian English in Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. It attempts the aspects projection of meaning in both novels through the configuration of language choice as contextualized in the Nigerian linguistic environment.

The study used qualitative analysis method.

Findings in the study state that that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has utilized various features of Nigerian English at different levels to convey meaning in Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. lexical borrowing remains a salient feature of both texts.

The study concludes that Adichie’s texts are products of contextualized features of Nigerian English. Being a product of code-mixing, the mixing of Nigerian languages with English in the genre remains a subtle way of resisting the overbearing influence of English in the Nigerian literary setting, especially among the educated.

The study recommended that; there is a need to suggest areas for further studies for advancement in the English language growth; research enquiry should be focused on the strategic aspects of African style of speaking in African novels; discourse studies should also be carried out in African novels rather than only on the speech aspects.
