INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A mast is defined as a ground-based or rooftop structure which gives supports to antennas at a height which enable it to satisfactorily send or receive radio waves. The masts are typically made are of steel lattice or tubular steel construction. Shire, Gavin G.; Karen Brown; Gerald Winegrad (June 2000). While Masts do not by themselves play a part in the transmission of mobile telecommunications. A mast which is a civil engineering terminology is cheaper to build and require an extended area surrounding them to accommodate the guy wires. Radio masts and towers are tall structures designed to support antennas for telecommunications and broadcasting, including television. They constitute of two main types: guyed and self-supporting structures. They are among the tallest human-made structures. Masts are often named after the broadcasting organizations that originally built them or currently use them. In the case of a mast radiator or radiating tower, the whole mast or tower is itself the transmitting antenna. The study seeks to appraise the effect of installed mast on surrounding soil.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The extensive use of mobile phones has resulted in telecommunication masts and base stations springing up in every corner of Nigeria. This has now been accompanied by fears, anxieties and debates about the possible adverse effects on human health; complaints and protests over radiation, noise, vibration and fumes from attached generating sets by residents close to these masts are currently on the high side in Nigeria. It seems however that the only consideration by the mobile telecommunication operators in Nigeria is ‘qualitative service’ rather than ‘health implications’ or ‘safety’ of neighbours and subscribers. The more people complain the more new masts and base stations spring up in residential areas, prompting the urge to look into the hazards and feelings of the people near whom telecommunication masts and base stations are installed. In Nigeria today, mobile phone masts are found erected indiscriminately as if they are completely safe to human health. They are today found close to schools, churches, hospitals, mosques, offices, markets, roads and residential areas. The problem confronting the study is to appraise the effect of the Installation of Mast on surrounding soil.

 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The fundamental objective of the study is to appraise the effect of the installation of mast on surrounding soil. The specific objectives of the study include;

1 To determine the relevance of the installation of mast.

2 To determine the effect of the installation of mast on surrounding soil.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1 What is the relevance of the installation of mast?

2 What is the effect of the installation of mast on surrounding soil?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study intends to provide valuable information concerning the effect of the installed mast on surrounding soil.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study focuses on the appraisal of the effect of the installation of mast on surrounding soil.

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The research was confronted with logistics and geographical constraint.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

MAST DEFINED

A mast is defined as a ground-based or rooftop structure which gives supports to antennas at a height which enable it to satisfactorily send or receive radio waves. The masts are typically made are of steel lattice or tubular steel construction.

TOWER DEFINED

A tower is a self-supporting or cantilevered structure.

MAST RADIATOR

A mast radiator is a radio tower or mast in which the whole structure works as an antenna. It is used frequently as a transmitting antenna for long or medium wave broadcasting. Structurally, the only difference is that a mast radiator may be supported on an insulator at its base. In the case of a tower, there will be one insulator supporting each leg.

ENTERPRISE DEFINED

This is referred to as an organization or a business. It is also referred to as a project, Business plan or Business activities

INNOVATION DEFINED

Innovation is the discovery of a new thing or business. It can also refer to something new or to a change made to an existing product, idea, or field.

INVENTION DEFINED

Usually something which has not previously been in existence?
